Backlink Management — Track Your Link Building Progress

Manage all your backlinks in one place. Create link records, track their status through the submission lifecycle, optimize anchor text, and control public visibility for your SEO portfolio.

Creating a Backlink Record

Every backlink in My Backlink is a record that connects your project to a specific platform. You can create links manually from the Links dashboard, or automatically through the Outreach workflow.

Manual Link Creation

From the Links dashboard, click "New Link" and fill in the required fields: select a project, choose a target platform, enter the link title, your website URL, and an optional description. You can also set the anchor text, published URL, and tags at creation time or add them later as the link progresses through its lifecycle.

Backlink Status Lifecycle

Each backlink follows a clear status lifecycle that helps you track where every link stands in the submission and review process:

Pending
Submitted
Published
Expired

Pending

The link record has been created but not yet submitted to the platform. This is the initial state for manually created links or links created via the Outreach workflow before you complete the platform's submission form.

Submitted

You've completed the platform's submission form and are waiting for the platform to review and approve your listing. Update your link to this status after submitting on the platform's website.

Published

Your backlink is live and active on the platform. This is the goal state — the platform has approved your submission and the link is passing SEO value. Add the published URL to your link record for easy verification and tracking.

Expired

The backlink is no longer active — it may have been removed by the platform, the listing expired, or the platform went offline. Monitor your published links periodically and update expired ones so your SEO reporting stays accurate.

Link Features & Settings

Anchor Text

The anchor text is the visible, clickable text of your backlink on the platform. Good anchor text includes your target keywords naturally and helps search engines understand what your page is about. Set your preferred anchor text when creating or editing a link record.

Public Showcase

Toggle the "Allow Public" switch to control whether your backlink appears in the public Links Gallery. Public links are visible to all visitors and showcase your link building portfolio. Keep links private if you prefer not to share your backlink strategy.

Tags & Notes

Add tags to organize and filter your backlinks by campaign, content type, or any custom category. Use the notes field to record submission details, contact information, or follow-up reminders for each link.

Why Backlink Tracking Matters

Building backlinks is only half the equation — tracking them is equally critical. Without systematic tracking, you won't know which submissions have been approved, which links have gone live, or which previously published links have expired. Effective backlink tracking gives you a real-time picture of your link building pipeline, helps you calculate submission-to-publication conversion rates, and identifies which platforms are most responsive. This data drives smarter decisions: you'll know where to focus future outreach efforts and can quickly spot and replace expired links before they impact your search rankings.

Anchor Text Best Practices

Anchor text — the clickable text of your hyperlink — sends important signals to search engines about what your linked page is about. Getting your anchor text strategy right is a key component of effective link building:

Use Natural Variations

Avoid using the exact same anchor text for every backlink. Search engines penalize over-optimized anchor text patterns. Instead, rotate between your brand name, target keywords, partial keyword matches, and natural phrases like "check this out" or "learn more here". A diverse anchor text profile looks organic and avoids triggering spam filters.

Include Target Keywords Naturally

While you should avoid keyword stuffing, incorporating your primary target keywords in some anchor texts helps search engines understand your page's topic. Aim for roughly 20-30% of your anchors to contain your main keyword or close variations. The rest should be branded terms, URLs, or generic phrases.

Match Anchor to Landing Page

The anchor text should accurately describe the page it links to. If your backlink points to a pricing page, use anchors related to pricing. If it points to a feature guide, use anchors describing that feature. Misleading anchor text that doesn't match the destination page can hurt your SEO performance and user experience.

Keep a Record of Used Anchors

Use the anchor text field in My Backlink to record the anchor text used for each submission. Over time, this creates a complete map of your anchor text distribution. Review it periodically to ensure you're maintaining healthy diversity and not over-using any single phrase.

Monitoring and Maintaining Your Backlinks

Backlink building isn't a set-it-and-forget-it activity. Links can disappear when platforms redesign, listings expire, or pages get removed. Establish a regular monitoring routine: check your published backlinks monthly by visiting the published URLs or using SEO tools to verify they're still live. When you discover a dead link, update its status to Expired in My Backlink and plan a replacement submission to another platform. Proactive monitoring keeps your backlink profile healthy and ensures your SEO gains are protected over time. My Backlink's status tracking system makes this easy — filter your links by Published status and work through the list systematically.

Measuring Backlink Quality

Not all backlinks contribute equally to your search rankings. Evaluate each backlink's quality using these criteria: the linking domain's authority (DR 50+ is good, 70+ is excellent), whether the link is dofollow (passes SEO value), the relevance of the linking page to your content, and the link's placement on the page (contextual links within article content are more valuable than footer or sidebar links). My Backlink captures key quality signals like DR and dofollow status for each platform, giving you the data you need to prioritize high-value link building opportunities and measure the overall quality of your backlink portfolio.

Tip

Use the Outreach workflow instead of manual link creation for a streamlined experience. It automatically creates the link record, opens the platform submission page, and lets you fill forms with templates — all in one flow.
